He is joint- editor of Studia Hibernica and of the Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy. He has published extensively on a variety of topics and issues on late-early modern Irish History, with particular reference to the eighteenth century. Current research interests include the operation of the eighteenth-century Irish legislature, famine and poor relief in the eighteenth century, the development of conservative Protestant thinking in late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the 'crowd' in eighteenth-century Ireland, the practice of medicine, and gender relations in early modern Ireland.
