Inaugural Cregan Professorships

The appointment of Dr Mark Morgan and Dr James Kelly to the inaugural Cregan Professorships has been confirmed by the Governing Authority of Dublin City University. 

Cregan Professorships acknowledge outstanding achievement in teaching, research and service by staff of St Patrick’s College.  They are named in honour of Dr Donal Cregan, CM, a distinguished former President of the College.   While they do not carry remuneration, they have the status of full personal Chairs of the University and are subject to the normal University criteria and procedures for such Chairs.

Professor Mark Morgan is Dean of the Education Faculty of the College.  A distinguished educationalist, researcher and teacher, he recently stepped down as Head of the Education Department in the College having completed seven years in that position.   He has been a member of staff in St Patrick’s College since 1973.   A native of Co Roscommon, he is a graduate of the University of London, and the London School of Economics, as well as St Patrick’s College.   He was formerly a post-doctoral fellow at Stanford University. 

Professor James Kelly is an outstanding scholar, teacher, academic and historian. He has consistently demonstrated leadership in research, teaching and programme development, and has contributed significantly to the College, the University and the wider community.  An honorary research Professor of Queens University Belfast and a member of the Irish Manuscripts Commission, he is the author of nine books and editor of eight more.  He edits three journals, and is the author of more than sixty chapters in books and articles in refereed journals.
