His PhD was a study of the sermons of Dr James Gallagher, bishop of the diocese of Raphoe (1725-1737) and thereafter Kildare & Leighlin (1737-1751), who first published the text in 1738. Dr Mac Murchaidh is also interested in modern Irish literature more generally and has taught courses on modern prose and poetry at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has published a wide range of articles and essays in various journals on Irish literature from the 18th century onwards. (See below for a full range of publications.)
His grammar of the Irish language for undergraduate students was published in 2002, Cruinnscríobh na Gaeilge (Cois Life), the third edition of which appeared in 2006. He was editor of a general collection of essays in English on the importance of the Irish language in 2004, ‘Who Needs Irish?’: Reflections on the Importance of the Irish Language Today (Veritas). (Read a review of that collection of essays by Irish language editor of The Irish Times, Pól Ó Muirí, here.) Dr Mac Murchaidh has also published two bilingual and thematic anthologies of Irish language poetry.
