The
Centre for Human Rights and Citizenship Education is an initiative
of St. Patrick's College, Drumcondra with the support and collaboration
of Amnesty International
(Irish Section). As a dedicated centre for training and research
on education for human rights, citizenship and democracy in schools,
it aims to develop and disseminate examples of excellence in this
field, and serve as a focal point for the critique of policy and
for the creation, evaluation, exchange and dissemination of information
and resources.
While
the main focus of its research is on education, it is interdisciplinary
in its approach and supports research into citizenship and human
rights across the Humanities. The centre is committed to developing
a democratic, participative, and inclusive approach to education,
based on the principles of freedom, equality, justice and peace.
It aims to work with and support schools as model communities, in
which there is respect for the individual, for difference, and for
equality of rights. It is committed to promoting the full participation
of children in education and undertakes to ensure that the voices
of children are recognised and heard in the work of the centre.
