Curriculum science
Curriculum science is a practical subject that helps equip students with the knowledge and skills required to implement the Primary Science Curriulum. This subject is taught through practical workshops where students work through, discuss and reflect upon numerous activities that can be taught in primary classrooms. The subject matter covers the following areas within science; Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Technology and Environmental awareness and care.
Biology
Bioscience is a course specifically designed for both Education and Arts/Humanities students. Biology centred, it also contains elements from other sciences, technology, education and culture. Major aims of the course include the acquisition of scientific literacy, attitude and the process steps of scientific method.
As all topics start from first principles, no prior scientific knowledge is required to do well in this enjoyable and enriching study.
The course deals with living things including people, - their nature, diviersity, functioning, interdependence, change and continuity over time.
The course is examined by a combination of continuous assessment, assignments, a practical examination and by a written examination
M.Ed
Special Option: Science Education.
The Biology and Education Departments work in collaboration to offer three modules in the area of science education. These are:
- A module in science education incorporating in-college teaching with a school-based practicum.
- A summer module that advances student's engagement with research.
- A module in advanced theory and practice.
Aims
The Special Option in Science Education aims to develop students' understanding of the issues involved in the pedagogy of primary science. It aims to help students relate current developments in science educational research to their own practice-based contexts.
Methods of Teaching
Workshops, lectures, field work, discussions, debate, student presentations.
Assessment
Course work per module: One assignment of approximately 5000 words
Cert/Diploma
