IASSEE:
Irish Association for Social, Scientific and Environmental
Education
Background:
In November 2000, lecturers in History, Geography and Science
Education from St. Patrick’s College, CICE, Froebel
College, Marino and Mary Immaculate College came together
to discuss the possibility of setting up an inter-college
association. It was agreed that this should be an all-Ireland
group and invitations were issued to St. Mary’s and
Stranmillis to attend an inaugural meeting in February 2001.
Invitations were also issued to interested parties in Trinity
College and DIT, Dun Laoire. Arising from the February meeting,
an association was set up and the following broad aims adopted:
- To
develop North/South links in initial teacher education
and to support the development of projects and research
in an all-Ireland context
- To
improve the quality of teaching and learning in History,
Geography and Science Education through sharing experience
and ideas on a North/South basis
- To
improve the quality of teaching and learning in History,
Geography and Science at primary level in Ireland through
involvement in schools
- To
engage in joint research which would focus on a) student
teachers b) children’s understanding c) good practice
in an all-Ireland context with particular emphasis on
North/South aspects
- To
support and encourage post-graduate study in History,
Geography and Science Education on an all-Ireland basis
- To
provide a stimulus for debate and discussion and a forum
for the dissemination of ideas through an annual conference
