IASSEE

IASSEE: Irish Association for Social, Scientific and Environmental Education

Background:
In November 2000, lecturers in History, Geography and Science Education from St. Patrick’s College, CICE, Froebel College, Marino and Mary Immaculate College came together to discuss the possibility of setting up an inter-college association. It was agreed that this should be an all-Ireland group and invitations were issued to St. Mary’s and Stranmillis to attend an inaugural meeting in February 2001. Invitations were also issued to interested parties in Trinity College and DIT, Dun Laoire. Arising from the February meeting, an association was set up and the following broad aims adopted:

  • To develop North/South links in initial teacher education and to support the development of projects and research in an all-Ireland context
  • To improve the quality of teaching and learning in History, Geography and Science Education through sharing experience and ideas on a North/South basis
  • To improve the quality of teaching and learning in History, Geography and Science at primary level in Ireland through involvement in schools
  • To engage in joint research which would focus on a) student teachers b) children’s understanding c) good practice in an all-Ireland context with particular emphasis on North/South aspects
  • To support and encourage post-graduate study in History, Geography and Science Education on an all-Ireland basis
  • To provide a stimulus for debate and discussion and a forum for the dissemination of ideas through an annual conference
