The Centre for Human Development is composed of an interdisciplinary group of scholars at St Patrick’s College whose teaching and research interests converge on issues related to the development of human beings and societies over time and across local and global contexts. Well-being and human flourishing are explored from a variety of perspectives underpinned by a holistic view of the human that includes emotional, intellectual, spiritual, aesthetic and civic dimensions.
As members of the Joint Faculty of Education of Dublin City University, we contribute to foundation courses in Education and are also responsible for Human Development as a subject in the Humanities programme at both under- and postgraduate levels.
Our work is directed to greater understandings of:
human needs and capacities at crucial stages of the developmental process and in varying historical and cultural contexts;
factors and challenges relating to success or failure in meeting these needs and developing these capacities in individuals and their communities;
informing strategies and policies for enhancing well-being, in its various dimensions, across the life-span while addressing both individual, intra psychic dynamics and wider social, cultural and economic processes that condition them, in Irish and global contexts.
