Aims
This course seeks to familiarise students with current thought and research in the area
of educational disadvantage, to explore the development of policy in relation to
disadvantage and to investigate a range of approaches to tackling disadvantage at a
national, local and classroom level. International best practice and research of the
College’s Educational Disadvantage Centre will also be examined to facilitate the
development of a critical and informed understanding of the key issues in this area.
Module 1: Critical approaches to Equality in Education
This module seeks to develop your potential as an agent of change with regard to
strategic policy making concerning equality in education at the school level, local
community level, regional and national levels and to develop awareness of the
importance of a community development approach to relations between the school
and local community. A critical approach will be developed to understanding the
various ideologies underlying terms such as ‘educational disadvantage’, while the
Educational Disadvantage Centre’s recent research will be examined with a view to
future progress and models of good practice in this area.
Module 2: Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Education
We will examine the conceptual underpinnings for the practice of ‘educational
equality’, with a view towards encouraging educational actors to use a common
language based on a shared understanding. The course will also encourage
participants to consider the changes required to work towards educational equality,
changes needed from teachers, children, families and the education system itself to
shift the systemic patterns of inequality in the process and outcomes of education.
We will look at the resources, attitudes, and relationships required to establish
learning environments where all children and young people have an equivalent
opportunity to release their unique power and potential.
Module 3: Future Directions in Moving Beyond Educational Disadvantage
Course participants will be invited to dialogue with a range of speakers on key issues
relevant to moving beyond educational disadvantage. Each presenter on this module
will be engaging with their personal view of a priority area to ensure that present and
future generations maximize their potentials in the education system in moving
beyond educational disadvantage.
