Research Interests
Research interests include: socio-cultural theories of learning mathematics; student teachers’ mathematical subject knowledge; a problem-based approach to teaching mathematics; mathematics teacher identity; attitudes, beliefs and ‘lay theories’ about teaching mathematics. For my doctoral study I researched how prospective teachers’ mathematical knowledge influences teaching. I am also interested in mathematics teacher development using Japanese lesson study, and in theorising the learning of mathematics and of teaching, which occurs with mutual engagement in such a shared enterprise.
Doctoral thesis:Developing Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching: A Three-Tiered Study of Irish Pre-service Primary Teachers. (September 2008) University of Cambridge
