Dervila Cooke joined Saint Patrick’s College in September 2008. She is a graduate of University College Dublin, where she completed a B.A., an M.A. and a PhD. She was an Erasmus student at the Université de Caen during her B.A. and followed her degree with a year as a lectrice at the Université de Rennes II. She also holds a Higher Diploma in Business Studies from University College Dublin. While working for her PhD, she spent a year studying at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. Before coming to Saint Patrick’s College, she was Senior Lecturer at Oxford Brookes University. Other places she has taught include the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, University College Dublin, and Waterford Regional Technical College (now W.I.T.). She was an IRCHSS postdoctoral research fellow at Trinity College Dublin from 20042006. During that time she also carried out research in Paris.

Research Interests

  • Contemporary and 20th century focus
  • Autobiography/autofiction, especially in the work of Patrick Modiano
  • Aspects of Quebec literature (autobiography, literature of migration, interculturalism in text and film)
  • Approaches to the city (especially Paris), and city wandering (flânerie) in various forms of expression (literature, photography, film)
  • Thinking photography, e.g. interaction of photography and text/film; photography in film; approaches to street and portrait photography; ethics in photography
