Isabelle Lemée joined the French Department of St Patrick’s College in September 2008. She did her primary degree in English language and literature at the Université de Rouen in France, with a BA specialization in the Elizabethan period. In 1993 she was sent to Ireland by her University to be a “lectrice” in the French Department in University College Dublin. She then received her Ph.D. from University College Dublin in 2003. She looked at: “L’acquisition de la variation socio-stylistique par des apprenants hibernophones de français L2.” Before coming to St Patrick’s College, Isabelle Lemée was a professor at State University New York in Albany. She also lectured for 4 years in the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies in Dublin City University.

Teaching Areas
Dr Lemée’s current teaching (2010/2011) includes the following courses:

  • Langue et expression écrite
  • Acquisition de la langue seconde
  • Introduction à la linguistique
  • Enseignement des langues vivantes en primaire

She also organises the Research Seminars in the French.

Research Interests

  • Second Language Acquisition (SLA), especially the acquisition of French and pedagogy
  • Canadian Studies, with special reference to French Immersion Education
  • Sociolinguistics (particularly of French and English, including French Canadian forms)
  • Variation Theory and the application of sociolinguistic variationist approaches to SLA
  • Second Language Instruction, with particular reference to the Advanced Learner and the Advanced Language Curriculum
  • French Language and Linguistics, as well as General and Applied Linguistics
