Welcome to the Department of French at St. Patrick’s College

The Department offers French as part of the undergraduate BA and BEd degree programmes. In each programme, students take courses in written and oral language, French & francophone literature, art, cinema & civilisation, linguistics and sociolinguistics, and second language acquisition. Over three-years, students prepare and maintain an online language portfolio, are initiated into research on a literary and/or film topic and take some programme-specific courses: BA students follow specially-tailored intensive language and literature courses, while BEd students take a course on teaching methodologies in modern languages for primary school.
All courses are taught primarily in French and delivered through lectures, seminars and tutorials. Particular emphasis is attached to small-group learning, affording students excellent supervision opportunities and frequent access to the Department’s dedicated teaching staff. This teaching and supervision is complemented by students’ regular engagement in self-directed study and learning.
Currently, the Department has a full-time staff of four, including two native French speakers, a number of part-time staff and an administrator. All academic members of staff are actively engaged in research activities in language learning, literature, film and linguistics, among others. Students of French avail, on a regular basis, of the research and learning resources in the College’s digitized media lab, and benefit from close class and study contact with visiting francophone students. Three-year degree students are strongly encouraged to spend at least one semester studying in a French or Belgian College of Education or University as part of the Erasmus student-exchange programme. Students may also opt to follow a four-year BA International or four-year BEd International.
At post-graduate level, the Department offers an MA in Humanities (French) by Major Thesis. Proposals for research in the areas listed here will be welcomed in particular.
More detailed information on these and other aspects of the Department’s work (including its Research Seminar Series) can be found by following the appropriate links on this page. Further enquiries may be addressed to the Administrator or to the Head of Department.
