Summer Courses: An Exciting Fusion of Theory and Practice

A range of summer courses, exemplifying the fusion of theory and practice, took place in St Patrick’s College in early July. Opening the summer programme, Dr Fionnuala Waldron, the incoming Head of Education, emphasised the importance of lifelong learning as one of the hallmarks of teacher effectiveness and commitment, and as espoused in the Teaching Council’s Code of Professional Conduct. She also drew attention to the nature of the relationship between the College and practicing teachers as one of synergy and mutual learning that brings added value to the education system as a whole.

The summer courses this year included a regular summer course on Play in the Infant Classroom lead by the Early Childhood department, Inservice Certificate/Diploma courses in Physical Education and in Choral Conducting in Education and in the Community, and modules on the MEd programme with special options in Literacy, and History, Geography and Local Studies.  The Kodály Society of Ireland’s summer course was also held in association with St Patrick’s College.

While some of the course participants are currently enrolled in online programmes in the College or elsewhere, many travelled long distances from various parts of the country to maximise the opportunity for practical learning experiences and interaction with colleagues, lead by expert staff.  Opportunities to handle instruments, equipment and resources (including ICT), to explore the environment outdoors, to observe and be observed by experts, and to engage in critical dialogue were considered by teachers to be of enormous value.
