Mathematics Department History
The St Patrick's College Department of Mathematics - offering Mathematics as an academic subject within the newly established BEd degree programme - welcomed its first students in September 1974. Its first staff members were Fr Brendan Steen (then Head of Department) and Olivia Bree (now Registrar of St Patrick's College) - they were later joined by Dr Fred Klotz. The most recent addition to staff of the Mathematics Department is Dr Madeeha Khalid, appointed in 2008.
When the BEd degree programme was introduced in 1974, St Patrick's College was then a Recognised College of the National University of Ireland, and the external examiners for its programme of mathematical studies were the Head of Mathematics in University College Dublin, and the external examiner in Mathematics for the National University of Ireland.
In 1993 St Patrick's College became a College of Dublin City University, one consequence of which was the introduction of a BA programme in Mathematics. The department nominates an external examiner who is appointed for a three-year term by DCU. Since 1993 our external examiners have been Prof Nigel Ray (Manchester University, 1993-1996), Prof John Jones (Warwick University, 1996-1999), Prof Fred Piper (London University, 1999-2002), Dr Andrew Baker (Glasgow University, 2002-2005); the current external examiner is Prof Anthony G. O'Farrell (National University of Ireland, Maynooth, 2005-).
