Minister Opens Fourth Conference on Research in Mathematics Education
Minister Seán Sherlock, TD, Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation and Education and Skills (with special responsibility for Research and Innovation) today opened the Fourth National Conference on Research in Mathematics Education in St Patrick's College, Drumcondra. The first National Conference on Mathematics Education in Ireland - a Research Perspective was the brain child of Dr Séan Close, former lecturer in the Education Department of St Patrick’s College and currently working in the Educational Research Centre. This biennial conference has become a significant event for mathematics education researchers at all levels in Irish education. Keynote speakers at this year's conference are Dr Paul Andrews, University of Cambridge, Dr Therese Dooley, St Patrick's College, Dr Aki Murata, Stanford University and Professor Ron Tzur, University of Colorado.
The Conference also includes papers by St Patrick’s College Staff members Sinéad Breen Designing rich sets of tasks for undergraduate calculus courses, Dolores Corcoran, Lesson Study in practice: Staff ownership of mathematics teacher professional development, Elizabeth Dunphy, Rethinking approaches to the learning and teaching of mathematics for 3-6 year old children in early education settings in Ireland, Maurice O’Reilly, Looking back to look forward: The mathematical identity of prospective mathematics teachers, Nkosinanthi Mpalami, Learning to teach mathematics by means of representations-Thandi’s case, Siún Nic Mhuirí Look who’s talking now-The role of talk in relation to mathematical thinking and problem solving and Miriam Ryan The language of problem–solving in immersion school-An investigation.
