Courses
Our Mathematics Programme aims to provide our students with a solid grounding in the core areas of Algebra, Analysis and Number Theory. Topics such as Statistics and Cryptography illustrate some of the applications of mathematics in the world today, while the History of Mathematics explores how important mathematical ideas arose and subsequently developed. Although considerable use is made of mathematical software, such as MAPLE and GeoGebra in many courses, and Excel in the third year Statistics course, no previous computer experience is necessary. Throughout, the emphasis is on understanding the ideas of mathematics as well as technical proficiency in solving problems.
The table below shows the courses being offered in the academic year 2011-2012. All of the courses are joint BEd/BA, with the exception of MATH 204/304, which is offered exclusively to BA students. The first year courses MATH 101 and MATH 102 are year-long, each entailing two lectures per week and one tutorial on alternate weeks, while MATH 108 is offered as a short module with one hour per week for part of the year. All second and third years courses are taught over a 12-week semester, with three lectures and one tutorial/ computer lab class per week. MATH 201, 203, 301 & 306 will be taught in semester I of 2011-2012, while the remaining second and third year modules run in semester II. Course details, together with notes, problem sheets, lab worksheets, etc., will be available from the lecturers or, in some cases, can be found by following the links below.

| MATH 302* | Abstract Algebra |
| MATH 306 | Statistics |
| MATH 304* | History of Mathematics |
* offered in semester II
In alternate years MATH 205/305 Geometry is offered to second and third year BA students.
Other courses previously offered include Number Theory & Cryptography, The Real Number System & Cantorian Set Theory and Challenging Mathematical Puzzles & Problems.
Continuous assessment normally accounts for 30% of each course grade for all second and third year courses, with the remaining 70% allocated for a three-hour written examination paper. In first year, continuous assessment counts for somewhat more than 30% - the details for BEd1 and BA1 Mathematics will be explained to students by the first year co-ordinator.
