Teaching Overseas

Graduates may be interested in teaching in International schools which are located around the world. Check out the Council of International Schools for list of schools and recruitment fairs.

UK
Recognition of Irish Qualifications

Fully probated registered teachers in Ireland are covered by the EU Council Directive 2005/36/EC regarding mutual recognition of qualifications throughout the EU. To start the process, Irish qualified teachers must first apply for "Qualified Teacher Status" with the relevant teaching council (see below), the Teaching Council of Ireland will issue a letter (on request) of "Professional Standing" to fully probated registered teachers for submission to the teaching councils in the UK. On obtaining QTS in the UK, you must then apply for registration with the relevant teaching council, registered teachers are issued with a "Teacher Reference Number", which has replaced the DFES number, sometimes requested by schools.

Note, un-probated registered primary teachers in Ireland are issued with a letter confirming "Conditional Registration," by the Teaching Council of Ireland, un-probated primary school teachers are not covered by the EU Council Directive 2005/36/EC. Un-probated teachers who wish to teach in England or Wales may apply for provisional registration as overseas trained teachers with the GTCE or the GTCW and teach in England for up to 4 years from the date of commencing first teaching post, up to 2 years in Wales. Check out the Teacher Training Agency UK for further information.

In Scotland, Irish qualified but unprobated teachers are eligible to apply for registration through the Exceptional Admissions route to the Register department of the GTCS.  Teachers submit a certificate of conditional registraton from the Teaching Council for Ireland along with degree transcript and other relevant documentation. If eligible for registration Irish qualified teachers will be placed on probation for 270 days of full-time equivalent teaching (or 190 days of continuous teaching in one school).   As part of this probationary period, you will be required to complete a minimum of 60 days’ full-time equivalent satisfactory and relevant mainstream teaching in a Scottish school.  Please visit www.probationerteacherscotland.org.uk for full details on the Standard for Full Registration.

Completing induction in England & Wales: Officially Irish qualified teachers cannot complete their full induction (probation) in England and Wales, though the Teaching Council in Ireland is aware of some graduates who have succeeded in completing their induction year there. Graduates can complete the 100 days service aspect of probation provided it is completed in a a mainstream class and in a state-inspected school and that the school completes and signs the completion of service section of form C, available on the Teaching Council website. Graduates will have to undergo the competence aspect of their probation in Ireland: find a position in an Irish school & make an application for inspection visits using form OP1 available on www.lec.ie.

North America
USA: Licensing and Certification Requirements for Teachers
Step 1. Have your degree/Grad.Dip.Ed evaluated by an agency approved by the relevant state commission for foreign transcript evaluation. Each state provides a list of approved private organisations which provide this service for a fee. Check here for list for California

Step 2. Once your have obtained your evaluation, you must then apply for a teaching license/certification. Each state has its own certification requirements, which typically include the following components:
Education: A bachelor’s degree at a minimum, and have completed a traditional or alternative teacher preparation program. To get your certification you will need to supply college transcripts and other verification noted above.

Step 3. States also require that you complete a general teaching certification exam, such as a Praxis test, as well as a content-specific test for the subject(s) that you want to teach. Check out http://www.teach.gov/  States have a variety of licences depending on qualifications and experience.

The Education Department of University of Kentucky has links to 50 education boards which outline the licence requirements for each state.

Transferability of License: NASDTEC Interstate Agreement outlines which other states' educator certificates will be accepted by that state.

Other Options:
1.VIF Teacher Exchange Programme: Qualified teachers with one year's experience can apply for teaching positions through the VIF programme, an international teacher programme. Their services include a relocation package, an orientation program and mentoring, and career services to assist you as you further your international teaching career after your three-year stay. Officially designated by the U.S. government as an Exchange Program Sponsor, VIF sponsors teachers' cultural-exchange visas. VIF will also assist you in obtaining education certification in their host state. Students/graduates of the College who require additional information can contact the careers service directly.

2. Look for a Sponsor: Graduates may find the independent or Catholic school system more accessible initially, they may be willing to sponsor qualified teachers who wish to apply for a visa.
A word of caution: employment prospects for teachers in the USA at present are not encouraging.
