Profile of the President

Pauric Travers is an educationalist and historian. He is a graduate of UCD where he completed his BA and his MA and the Australian National University where he completed his PhD.

A member of the teaching staff of the College since 1981, he was appointed first lay President of St Patrick's College, Drumcondra, in 1999. He is a member of DCU Governing Authority. He is a founding Director of the Centre for Cross Border Studies; a member of the North/South Standing Committee on Teacher Education; a founding member of Conference of Heads of Irish Colleges of Education (CHoICE); a member of the Board of the Teaching Council; a member of the Educational Studies Association of Ireland and a variety of other learned societies.

Previous roles include: Academic Director, Parnell Summer School; Joint Editor, Studia Hibernica; Member of Management Committee Irish Historical Studies; Treasurer, Irish Historical Society; Chairman, Irish Centre for Australian Studies, Dublin; Committee Member Irish Committee for Historical Sciences; Member of History in Schools Sub-Committee. Dr Travers has lectured extensively at historical and educational conferences in Europe, America and Australia and has acted as external examiner for a number of third level institutions in Ireland and abroad. His publications include Settlements & Divisions: Ireland 1870-1922 (Helicon History of Ireland vol.7, 1988);Time Traveller (Fallon & Co, Dublin, 1996) a multi-volume history programme for Irish Primary Schools; Eamon de Valera (Life & Times no. 3, Dublin, 1994); and jointly edited collections on The Irish Emigrant Experience in Australia (Poolbeg, 1991); Irish Culture and Nationalism 1750-1950 (Macmillan 1982); jointly edited The Ivy Leaf – The Parnells Remembered (UCD Press 2007) and Words of the Dead Chief – Charles Stewart Parnell (UCD Press 2009) .
