Academic Regulations Governing Postgraduate Degrees by Research and Thesis

4. Period of Time for Completion of Research

  1. The period required by a candidate able to devote a large proportion of his/her time to the programme will normally be two years for a masters degree and three years for a PhD. In exceptional cases only, Academic Council may approve a shorter period.
  2. Where a candidate has not presented for examination within three years in the case of a masters degree and five years in the case of a PhD, application must be made to Academic Council, through the Registry, for the period of registration to be extended. Extensions granted by Academic Council will be subject to such limits and conditions as Academic Council may determine.
  3. Where a candidate carried out his/her programme of research on a part-time basis, the time devoted should normally not exceed four years for a masters degree and six years for a PhD.
