An Mheitheal um Theagasc na Gaeilge ar an Tríú Leibhéal Present at the First International Language Conference
The inter-institutional consortium, An Mheitheal um Theagasc na Gaeilge ar an Tríú Leibhéal, made a joint presentation at the First International Language Conference, ‘Translation, Technology and Autonomy in Language Learning and Teaching’, held in NUI Galway on 10-11 December. Their panel presentation documented the progress of the national Third Level Irish Language Syllabus Project, co-funded by Foras na Gaeilge and co-directed by John Walsh (NUI Galway) and Máirín Nic Eoin (St Patrick’s College), from its inception through to the first stage of implementation of the new syllabus during the academic year 2009-2010. In the course of the presentation, John Walsh outlined the background of the project and the structure and operation of An Mheitheal um Theagasc na Gaeilge ar an Tríú Leibhéal. Ailín Ní Chonchúir (Project Manager, based in St Patrick’s College), explained the principles underlying the new syllabus, which is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Máire Ní Neachtain (Mary Immaculate College of Education, Limerick) and Máirín Nic Eoin presented their preliminary research on the implementation process with First Year BA and B Ed students in their respective colleges, focussing in particular on the issues of teacher and learner autonomy.
Phase 1 and 2 of the Project, both co-funded by Foras na Gaeilge, are now complete, with the First Year and Second Year Syllabi, together with illustrative teaching and learning materials, available at the project website . Foras na Gaeilge has granted funding for Phase 3 – the creation of a Third Year Syllabus and accompanying teaching and learning materials. Work on this will commence in the New Year.
