Analysing Maths
On Thursday 6th November, talks were given in St Patrick's College by three young mathematicians (pictured here). Oyinlola Dada from Our Lady's College, Drogheda, Helen Iliff from Eureka Secondary School, Kells and Galin Ganchev from Limerick who is a first year maths student in Cambridge spoke in front of teachers and lecturers in celebration of excellence in extracurricular mathematics in schools. Lola spoke on mathematical analysis of sound patterns, Helen spoke on the mathematics of simple cables while Galin proved a theorem in geometry from an 'olympiad' competition. There was a good crowd including His Excellency, Dr Emil Yalnazov, Ambassador of Bulgaria, and his wife Prof. Sylvia Nikolova-Yalnazova. The speakers impressed the audience by their grasp of the technical detail of mathematics and well as the clarity of their presentation. The event was jointly organised by the Irish Mathematical Society, the Irish Mathematics Teachers' Association and the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.
