Mathematics Seminar
The Department of Mathematics, St Patrick's College, will host a seminar with speaker Dr Bernd Kreussler
(Mary Immaculate College, Limerick)
Date & Time: Tuesday 1 December 2009, 4.00pm
Venue: Room F201, St Patrick's College, Drumcondra, Dublin 9
Title: From the arithmetic-geometric mean to Yang-Baxter Equations
Abstract: The talk will start fairly elementary with the arithmetic and geometric mean of two positive numbers. Iterating these two means leads to an elliptic
integral, which was known to Gauss at the end of the 18th century.
The inverse of such an integral is called an elliptic function.
In the second part of the talk, Jacobi's elliptic functions will play an
important role in the description of solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter
equation.
