Geography Students Fieldtrip to Belfast
48 St Patrick’s College BA students in Geography undertook a fieldtrip to Northern Ireland on 23rd February 2008 completing the final part of their 2nd year fieldwork programme. The programme included a combination of fieldwork and computer-based learning. Marking the tenth anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, essentially the trip was a voyage of discovery for the majority of students for whom it was their first visit to Belfast. Coiste na Niarchimi (Sponsored by the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation) provided local guides for visits of the Falls Road and West Belfast, followed by a walk on the Shankill Rd. and other areas of East Belfast. Members of the former prisoners associations gave students direct insights into the various strands of heritages and cultures in Northern Ireland, and the positive results of development projects in Belfast over the past decade. Due to the enthusiastic reactions of the students, it is planned that this fieldtrip will be repeated next year.
