Bach's St John Passion
Enchiriadis Treis will perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion on Saturday 8 April at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin. Conducted by Marion Doherty, the solo tenor is Dr Timothy Stalter, Iowa. The orchestra, from Sweden, London and Ireland, will be playing on period instruments, which is altogether a different sound from modern instruments. There will be a lute and a viola da gamba, as well as baroque flutes (like the traditional wooden flutes) and baroque bassoon (less keys), and the choir (Enchiriadis Treis) will sing at Baroque pitch (which is half a tone lower than nowadays). It will be a very special occasion, and a great opportunity to hear the long gospel sitting down. It is a very dramatic work with soloists singing the parts of Jesus, Pilate, servants, Peter, Officers, and then other soloists singing arias, reflecting on the story of the Passion. The performance will take 2.25 hours.
