President McAleese presents CREST Science Awards in St Patrick's College
On Tuesday 22 February, President McAleese presented Silver and Bronze CREST Awards to students from 19 schools around the country; students from six of the schools demonstrated their projects to the President. Dr Pauric Travers, President, St Patrick's College formally welcomed President McAleese to the College. Speaking to the 300 or so pupils from Primary and Secondary schools around the country, the President praised their ingenuity and said the calibre of young people present made her hopeful for the future. Two pupils from Clontuskert NS in Co Galway presented the President with a Shamrock intricately constructed from Lego.

The CREST awards are the largest national award scheme for project work in STEM subjects in the UK and have run for 25 years there. This is the first year the Awards have been presented to Irish schools. Awards are presented in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The Galway Education Centre, in partnership with the British Science Association, organised the event in St Patrick's College.
