Catholic Historical Society of Ireland Conference
The highly successful annual conference of the Catholic Historical Society of Ireland was hosted by St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, on Saturday 16 September 2006. In the first session, chaired by Dr James Kelly (Head of the History Department, St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra), Dr Michael Browne (University of Aberdeen) and Dr Phil Kilroy (Trinity College Dublin) delivered papers on the Enlightenment and the Penal Code in Ireland and Gallican and Ultramontane tensions in the Society of the Sacred Heart, 1800-1865 respectively. In the second session, chaired by His Eminence Cardinal Desmond Connell, Dr Nigel Aston (University of Leicester) spoke on the subject of Religion, Politics, and the Concept of Political Religion and Dr Dáire Keogh (History Department, St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra) presented a paper entitled ‘The Christian Brothers and European Fascism, 1933-40’.
