Citi Announces Increased Funding for TeachNet
Leading financial services company Citi announced at a recent ceremony that it would continue its support for the TeachNet initiative over the next two years.
TeachNet is a not-for-profit initiative, run by St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, which aims to improve student learning by helping primary and post-primary teachers to integrate web-based resources into their everyday work.
Teachers participating in TeachNet use the latest Web 2.0 tools – such as blogging, podcasting and social networking – to engage the interest of their pupils. Various innovative teaching tools have been developed as a result, including a website charting the history of Dublin’s 1913 Lockout; an interactive Flash Movie introducing students to sub-atomic particles; an online guide to producing an audiovisual play in French; and a project that uses video interview footage of primary school students’ grandparents to illustrate what life was like in Ireland in decades past.

TeachNet grants are currently funding 35 projects, involving over 900 students at primary and post-primary level. Seán Haughey TD, Minister of State for Lifelong Learning and Youth Work, attended the ceremony and commended the work of all involved in TeachNet.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Travers, President of St Patrick's College said that the College was proud to host the TeachNet Project. It fitted well with the College's mission in the area of teacher education and helps develop and maintain vital links between pre-service and in-service, College and schools, students and teachers, the academy and industry.
