St Patrick's College Alumni & Mathematics Education
The latest issue of the prestigious journal Educational Researcher (Vol. 37, No. 9, December 2008) contains articles by no fewer than three distinguished alumni of St Patrick’s College. A special issue on Foundations for Success: The Final Report of the National Mathematics Advisory Panel, the volume contains articles by Professor Anthony Kelly (‘Reflections on the National Mathematics Advisory Panel Final Report’; Professor Finbar Sloane (‘Randomised Trials in Mathematics Education: Recalibrating the Proposed High Watermark’); and Professor James Spillane (‘Policy, Politics and the National Mathematics Advisory Panel Report: Topology, Functions, and Limits’.
Anthony Kelly is a professor of educational psychology in the College of Education and Human Development, George Mason University, Fairfax VA. His research interests include design research methods, cognitive neuroscience and mathematics learning. Finbar Sloane is an associate professor in the Mary Lou Fulton College of Education, Division of Curriculum and Instruction, Arizona State University. His research focuses on the learning of mathematics, behavioral methodology, and the modelling of student mathematical development in multilevel contexts. James Spillane is the Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Chair in Learning and Organizational Change at Northwestern University, where he is a professor of human development and social policy, learning sciences,and management and organizations. With funding from the National Science Foundation, Spencer Foundation, and Institute for Education Sciences, his work explores the policy implementation process at the state, school district, school, and classroom levels, and school leadership and management.
