Launch of book on the village of Cloverhill, Co Cavan
A beautiful summer’s evening in rural north Cavan was the backdrop for the launch of ‘Cloverhill: A Church of Ireland Parish in County Cavan, c. 1720 – 2010’, written by Dr Jonathan Cherry of the Geography Department, St Patrick’s College. The book charts the evolution of the community and landscape of the small village of Cloverhill. It highlights the role of the Sanderson family, who built up a large estate in the area, and who were the leading agents in the construction of St John’s Church in the mid-nineteenth century. Drawing from a wide range of primary source material the book chronicles the evolution of both the built and social environments of the parish between 1860 and 2010. It highlights the powerful role played by particular individuals and the remarkable continuity that remains between the mid-nineteenth century and the present day.
The book coincides with the 150th anniversary of the building of St John’s Church and the launch on the 28th of May formed part of the opening of the weekend celebrations, with the entire local community attending.
‘Cloverhill: A Church of Ireland Parish in County Cavan, c. 1720 – 2010’ is published by Geography Publications and can be found at all good bookstores.
