Professor Joe Dunne - Inaugural Lecture, 26 October

Professor Joe Dunne will deliver his Inaugural Lecture as Cregan Professor of Education at St Patrick’s College on Tuesday 26 October 2010 in the College Auditorium at 7.30 p.m.   The lecture is entitled:

What’s the good of education?

"Education is now widely expected to serve a variety of ends: social problem-solving, cultural regeneration and, most insistently, economic prosperity and global competitiveness (e.g. through fostering ‘innovation’ and a ‘smart economy’). With these pressures to demonstrate that it is good for something else, is there a good of education itself that can be articulated and defended philosophically and in practice? The lecture will address this fundamental question for students and teachers as well as parents and policy-makers".

Cregan Professorships have been created by DCU to acknowledge outstanding achievement in teaching, research and service by staff of St Patrick’s College. They are named in honour of Dr Donal Cregan, CM, a distinguished former President of the College. They have the status of full personal Chairs of Dublin City University and are subject to the normal University criteria and procedures for such Chairs.
