What's the good of education?
Cregan Professor of the Philosophy of Education, Dr Joe Dunne, delivered his inaugural lecture before a capacity audience at St Patrick's College on 26 October 2010. Entitled 'What's the good of education?', the lecture was chaired by Professor Brian MacCraith, President of Dublin City University. The lecture traced Professor Dunne's personal development as an educational philosopher and explored the intrinsic "good" of education. Rejecting instrumental and other approaches, Professor Dunne's talk drew on the work of Plato, Aristotle, Paulo Freire, Martin Buber, and others. The lecture championed the insights to be gained from philosophy with children and the importance of the dispositions developed from this approach for citizenship in the contemporary republic.
Cregan Professorships are awarded by Dublin City University to College staff in recognition of outstanding contribution in the area of research and teaching. They are named after distinguished former President of the College, Dr Donal Cregan, CM, who was President from 1957-1976.
