Cregan Professorships Announced

The Governing Body of St Patrick’s College and the Governing Authority of Dublin City University have agreed to the introduction of Cregan Professorships for appropriately qualified staff in the College.   The professorships which are named in honour of Donal Cregan CM have the status of a full chair; they are adjunct to the university and there is no stipend attached.

Professor Donal Cregan CM was President of St Patrick’s College from 1957 to 1976. A distinguished educationalist and historian, he presided over the modernisation of the College both in terms of its physical infrastructure and in terms of its curriculum. His contribution to the re-invigoration of teacher education for a new Ireland has been widely recognised and is acknowledged inter alia by commentators including Joe Lee. Dr Cregan had the unusual distinction of simultaneously acting for a time both as President of the College and professor and Head of Education in University College Dublin (from 1973-75). His achievements as a historian of seventeenth century Ireland were recognised in 2000 when a conference was held in his honour: the proceedings Kingdoms in Crisis, edited by Micheál Ó Siochrú were published by Four Courts Press in 2001.

Academic staff whose achievements are outstanding in the area of research and who have demonstrated leadership in teaching and academic management may be deemed suitable for appointment to a Cregan professorship.  To be considered, a member of staff must demonstrate an outstanding record of academic achievement beyond that expected for satisfactory performance of Principal Lecturer duties.  He/she will have shown leadership and innovation in research, teaching and programme development, have contributed significantly to the university/community and its goals through additional internal and/or external activities and clearly demonstrated through their research, teaching and service to the University/community, that they would be of ‘Full Chair’ status both at a National and an International level.
