"Desuggestopedia" Accelerate Second-Language Acquisition
The International Office, St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra hosted a visit to the college of Professor Franz Ludescher from the Pädagogische Hochschule in Feldkirch, Austria from the 18th – 21st February. Professor Ludescher is an expert on alternative approaches to language learning, in particular the method of “Desuggestopedia” that claims to accelerate second-language acquisition and which is based on the ideas of Carl Rogers and his humanistic view of the role of students and teachers in the learning process. Professor Ludescher delivered a lecture – organised by Nóirín Ní Nuadháin of the Education Department – on his theories and work. The lecture was attended by a range of college personnel interested in second-language learning including members of staff from various departments, as well as both undergraduate and postgraduate students, and visiting international students. A lively discussion followed the main presentation, with great interest being expressed in the various alternative approaches and methods being addressed. Professor Ludescher also had the opportunity during his stay to visit a number of primary schools in the Greater Dublin area.

Three St Patrick’s College students are presently on an LLL-Erasmus study exchange this semester at the Pädagogische Hochschule in Feldkirch.
