A Wilde Affair

Dr Noreen Doody, Head of the English Department, St Patrick's College Dr Noreen Doody, Head of the English Department at St Patrick's College, was featured in A Wilde Affair, part of RTÉ's Scannal series on famous Irish scandals.Oscar Wilde In her capacity as a Wilde scholar, Dr Doody spoke alongside other academics and writers on the trials of Oscar Wilde. Wilde was charged in 1895 with "committing acts of gross indecency with other male persons". The affair caused enormous public outcry and was the most celebrated scandal of the late nineteenth century. In the documentary produced and directed by Diarmuid Goggins, RTÉ explores the trials and the lead up to them as well as the tragic outcome for one of Ireland's greatest dramatists and wits. The programme documents how Wilde's “meteoric rise to success as a literary and social figure was followed by an equally sudden fall into public disgrace, poverty and exile”.
