Roddy DoyleSorcha de Brún, Irish Language Officer in St. Pat's,won Duais Foras na Gaeilge last week for writing in Irish as part of the LiteraryAwards of Listowel Writers' Week.  The award was given for a short story entitled 'Craiceann'.  This is a short story about a mother and father who have outlived their son, and about how the discovery of an old,long-forgotten dusty pair of their child's shoes has the power to evoke many conflicting emotions for them, as well as play havoc with their thoughts. Much of the story is aboutjust how different the individual parents' memories are. The Duais Foras na Gaeilge award included the categories of drama, prose and poetry. The prize is worth €1, 500.  The Award Ceremony took place in the Listowel Arms Hotel in Kerry last Wednesday, where Colm Tóibín and Joseph O'Connor were the special guests. As part of the events of Writers' Week, Sorcha gave a reading last Thursday along with other winners, at which she talked a bit about the story and read parts of it. Some ofthe other awards that were presented included the Irish Fiction Award, The Byran McMahon Short Story Award, The Eamon Keane Full Length Play, Writers' Week Originals, Writing in Prisons and the Poetry Competition.  The short story 'Craiceann' can be found in the book Winners 2007 that has been published by Listowel Writers' Week.
