Duelling exhibition to blaze away
The National Museum of Ireland at Collins Barracks is hosting an exhibition on the history of duelling in Ireland. The Blaze Away exhibition will also highlight Ireland's illustrious gun and sword-making past. Research by Dr James Kelly, Head of History at St Patrick's College, shows that in a sample of 306 Irish duels fought between 1771 and 1790, there were 65 instant deaths and 16 mortal wounds. Less than a third ended without injury. Dr Kelly's book This Damn'd Thing Called Honour - Duelling in Ireland 1570-1860 provides much of the material for the exhibition.
