Cregan Professorship for Dr Joseph Dunne

The Governing Authority of Dublin City University has approved the award of a Cregan Professorship to Dr Joseph Dunne.  These Professorships which have the status of full personal Chairs of the University acknowledge outstanding achievement in teaching, scholarship and service by staff of St Patrick’s College.

Professor Joe Dunne

Professor Joseph Dunne is a Principal Lecturer in Education and Head of Human Development in the College.   A native of Co Tipperary, he is a graduate of University College Dublin, where he took a BA and PhD.  He is a philosopher of international repute.  His writings on education philosophy and childhood are widely respected.  His magnum opus Back to the Rough Ground: Techne and Phronesis in Modern Philosophy and in Aristotle (University of Notre Dame Press) 1993, was critically acclaimed and is an indispensable item on reading lists in philosophy departments all over the world.   Appointed to the staff of the College in 1970, Professor Dunne is a gifted teacher, wise counsellor and generous mentor who has made a significant contribution to the work of the College.
