International Week-Sweden

Dr Jones Irwin, Education Department, St Patrick’s College participated in an International Week at Linköping University, Campus Norrköping, in Norrköping, Sweden, from the 15th to the 19th March.  Participants came from Germany, France, Belgium, Lithuania, Sweden, Spain, Holland, Wales and Ireland.  Dr Irwin gave a workshop on ‘Interculturalism, Ethos and Irish Education’ and there were also workshops, amongst others, on ‘Youth in Sweden’, ‘Sock Puppets in Early Years Education’, ‘Art and Self-Development’ and ‘Welsh Culture and Bilingualism’, as well as a characteristic Swedish Outdoor Education excursion to Ågelsjön.  A visit was also organised to the famous Diamond school in Navestad, which has been a pioneer in Sweden with regard to multi-cultural education.

Dr Irwin additionally visited the Tema Genus (Department of Thematic Studies) at the second campus in Linköping city, which was the first department in Sweden to undertake inter-disciplinary work in the areas of gender, childhood and sexuality.  At Tema Genus, Dr Irwin presented a paper to the staff and postgraduate research seminar, entitled ‘Is there a Philosophy of Sex?’
