Hopes Dashed
For the second year in succession, Erin's Hopes, the footballers of St Patrick's College, fell at the last hurdle in their brave attempt to win the Trench Cup. In an exciting contest at DCU Sports Grounds on Saturday, the Hopes lost out by two points to a strong TCD side.
Despite the loss of two early goals, the Hopes rallied to lead by a goal at half-time. Early in the second half, with the Hopes dominating, TCD had a player sent off for a second yellow card offence. As so often happens, this disrupted the pattern of the game. TCD whittled away at the Hopes' lead. The turning point came at the three quarter mark when TCD scored a fortuitous goal when the ball rebounded off a post. Despite valiant efforts, the Hopes were unable to recover.
Well done to the panel of players and their mentors, who did the College proud.
Beidh lá eile againn.
