St Patrick's College Postgraduate Society
The first public meeting of the Postgraduate Society took place on 30th January with a lecture by guest speaker, Professor Declan Kiberd, chaired by the society’s president, Sandrine Brisset. In his thought-provoking talk, ‘Joyce and the Idea of a Common Culture’, Professor Kiberd argued that Joyce wrote Ulysses for the ordinary reader, and recommended a movement away from highly technical trans-national readings in favour of a new emphasis on individual responses to the text. The talk was followed by an interesting and enjoyable question and answer session.

Attendees at the event included the President of St Patrick’s College, Dr Pauric Travers, the Dean of Research, Dr Mary Shine Thompson, academics from various disciplines, members of the administration staff, postgraduate research students and postgraduate students from many of the Taught M.A. programmes, together with undergraduate students and alumni of St. Patrick’s College.
