Freshers on the Ball
St Patrick's College First Year Hurlers shone in Freshford on 30 March 2006, when they defeated Cork IT, with a final score of 1-16 to 2-19, in the Freshers' All Ireland Hurling Final.
Congratulations to the team and their management (students Richie Power and Darren O'Neill), who did the College proud.
The Irish Independent, 31/3/06, reports:
"Roche's point secures Freshers' crown for St Pat's
A late point from Jack Roche sealed an historic first victory for St Patrick's Training College, Drumcondra in an exciting Freshers' All-Ireland hurling final at Freshford.
A 13th minute Eoin Bolger point inspired St Patrick's, and with Paddy Hogan dominant at centre-back, they moved clear 0-9 to 0-4. CIT got back into the game with a 28th minute goal from Mark O'Connor before a point from O'Sullivan cut the interval arrears to 1-5 to 0-9 after playing with the wind.
Eddie O'Donoghue and Ger Arthur points within a minute of the restart for St Patrick's they looked set to roar on to victory. However, CIT refused to surrender to keep the game alive up to the dying minutes."
