An Icon for Ray Topley, RIP
Ray Topley, former head of the Religious Studies Department, and long-standing member of the staff of the College died on 9th September 2009. Co-incidently the same week saw the demise of the stately Beech Tree which stood at the entrance to the College for 200 years. The College has commissioned an icon, to be made from its wood, as a memorial to our esteemed colleague. Work on the icon will shortly be completed. In the meantime, the various stages - from tree to icon - may be followed from the link below:
Incisae servant a te mea nomina fagi,
Et legor Cenone, falce notata tua;
Et quantum trunci, tantum mea nomina crescunt. [Ovid]
(The Beeches, faithful guardians of your flame,
Bear on their wounded trunks Cenone's name;
And as the trunks, so still the letters grow.)
