European Geographers Visit St Patrick's College

Geographers from all over Europe visited St Patrick’s College on 26th to 28th of March 2009 to participate in workshops on citizenship and on fieldwork.  The event was hosted by Dr Gerry O’Reilly, Geography Department, St Patrick’s College, a senior member of the Herodot Network for Geography in Higher Education.  The network, which aims to improve the quality of geography teaching and learning, has more than 220 members from around the world.  Funded with support from the European Commission, Herodot has been active in formulating the response of geographers to the Bologna process, including work on the employability of geography graduates.  Already guidelines concerning GIS in geography education have been devised.  This meeting focused on considering the fundamental skills, competences, knowledge and understanding for secondary schools, undergraduate and postgraduate Geography in fieldwork and in citizenship.  Geography Department members Drs Gerry O’Reilly, Susan Hegarty and Ruth McManus presented current research on Fieldwork and Citizenship in Undergraduate Geography.
