Graduate Emma Gilchreest's fundraiser for Zambia
St Patrick's College BA Graduate, Emma Gilchreest, from Loughrea in Galway, spent a year working voluntarily in Zambia, with the Forum for African Women Educationalists of Zambia. Before she left she fund-raised for a - then undecided - project to help people living in the country. While she was working in Zambia she found a worthy one. In some areas of Zambia children walk for up to 20km to get to their nearest school. Many children, she found, were tired and exhausted and this has a negative effect on their concentration and some, particularly girls, are subjected to violence on the way to school.
Emma's fund-raising provided funds for a safe house which was built near a school in Nanga, Mazabuka. 40 vulnerable pupils no longer have to walk the long distance to get to school.
