Heaney receives Honorary Doctorate at St Patrick's College
Seamus Heaney, poet, dramatist and critic, was awarded a Doctorate in Philosophy (Honoris Causa) by Dublin City University yesterday. At the request of the Nobel Laureate, the ceremony took place at St Patrick's College Drumcondra, a College of the University.
The Poet was introduced by Dr Pauric Travers, President of the College, and the award was conferred by the President of DCU, Professor Brian MacCraith. During the ceremony, the National Chamber Choir performed a number of Seamus Heaney's favourite songs. The ceremony concluded with a inspiring address by Dr Heaney during which he recited his poem 'Alphabets'.

The ceremony was attended by a large audience of College and University students and staff, as well as Marie Heaney and invited guests from the world of Arts and Education.
Heaney was formerly a teacher and taught for a while in St Joseph's College of Education, Belfast, and Carysfort College of Education, Blackrock. Speaking after the ceremony, Dr Travers said that Seamus Heaney’s acceptance of the award would be welcomed by all those who valued the arts, creativity and the imagination in education. As a poet and a former teacher, Heaney exemplified these values which were needed now more than ever.
