Human Rights Education for a sustainable future
Internationally renowned experts in human rights and citizenship education participated in the conference ‘Human Rights Education for a Sustainable Future’ which was held in St Patrick’s College on September 19th and 20th. The conference was hosted by the Centre for Human Rights and Citizenship Education, in partnership with the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation and Amnesty International, Irish Section. The conference was opened by writer and human rights activist Roddy Doyle. The main keynote address was given by Professor James A. Banks, University of Washington, Seattle, who is an acclaimed theorist and educator in multicultural education. The conference was also addressed by Dr. Hugh Starkey, Institute of Education, University of London, Professor Audrey Osler, Centre for Citizenship and Human Rights Education, University of Leeds, and Professor Cherry McGee Banks, University of Washington, Seattle, who are recognised as leaders in the related fields of diversity, citizenship and human rights education. Other contributors included Dr. Ursula Kilkelly UCC, Dr. Laura Lundy QUB, Professor Colum Kenny, DCU, Dr. Peter Kirschlaeger, University of Lucerne, Mia Matlainan, University of Helsinki, Kristi Rudelius Palmer, Human Rights Center, University of Minnesota, Sean Love, Director Fighting Words and Sneh Aurora International Human Rights Education Project Manager, Amnesty International (International Secretariat). Workshops were held in areas such as Drama, ICT and Whole School Approaches. The conference included contributions from the Office of the Ombudsman for Children, the Irish Human Rights Commission and the Department of Education and Science, along with presentations from educators and policy specialists from a range of Irish institutions.
