IPPEA Conference held at St Patrick's College

St Patrick's College hosted the conference of the Irish Primary Physical Education Association (IPPEA) on Saturday March 28th.  The conference ran parallel with a module of the In-service Certificate Course in Physical Education, which is being offered by the college to a cohort of primary teachers during 2009. Professor Margaret Talbot (Chief Executive of the Association for Physical Education, UK) presented the keynote address to the conference where she spoke about the key role of the primary teacher in the promotion of physical education and physical activity.  She also presented on developments in physical education internationally to the In-service Certificate students.  Workshops were organised by the IPPEA during the day offering teachers the opportunity to engage in activities relating to the teaching of rhythmic gymnastics, walking, games, dance and athletics to young children.  Additional presentations focused on providing for children with motor difficulties, the promotion of physical activity during breaktimes in schools and the active schools award. The IPPEA conference provided a unique opportunity for conference delegates and In-service Certificate students to focus on developments in physical education nationally and internationally and to engage in practical workshops designed to enhance their teaching of physical education to children in primary schools.
