Icon unveiled
On Thursday 24 November an icon in memory of Dr Raymond Topley, former Head of Religion in the College, who passed away on 9 September 2009, was unveiled and blessed in the College Chapel. Ray’s death coincided with the demise of the stately beech tree that stood at the entrance to the College for over 200 years. Some of the wood was preserved and used as the base for an Icon, made by Thomas McCloughlin, member of staff and colleague of Ray. Details are as follows:

Prototype: icon of Christ Pantokrator (Ruler of All) by the Hieromonk Euphrosynos (1542) in the Holy Monastery of Dionysios, Mount Athos, Greece
Size: 1.5 x 1.2 metres
Wood: beech planks, biscuit joined, with beech timber frame
Colours: all natural pigments made from earths, metal salts and lapis lazuli.
Medium: egg tempera (organic or free-range eggs in red-wine vinegar)
Gold: 24ct in sheets
Cloth: calico
Gesso: French chalk, glue, and linseed oil
Glue: rabbit hide.
