Inservice Courses for Primary Teachers

A wide range of Inservice Courses for Primary Teachers are on offer this summer in July and August, designed and developed by lecturing staff from across the College. The courses may be taken as stand-alone courses or as credit towards the Inservice Certificate and Diploma in Education.

The courses on offer include

* Primary Science
* Geography
* Visual Arts
* Physical Education
* Assessment for Learning
* Digital Learning

A new development this year is the inclusion of a course for teachers titled:

Teachers’ and Children’s Well-being: Reducing Stress and Enhancing Self-Worth to be presented by Dr Mark Morgan and Dr Claire Hayes.

One of the aims of the course will be to provide teachers with an understanding of the various factors involved in stress and well-being. A major problem encountered by schools is dealing with issues of bullying/victimization, including teachers and children. The approach advocated here will involve creating a caring ethos, rather than merely prevention of negative outcomes.

Dr Claire Hayes has been involved in research on stress and anxiety among children and adolescents and has developed a programme to address such matters. Her recently published book (Stress Relief for Teachers, 2006) was launched in the College earlier this year.

A dynamic and practical course for primary teachers on the teaching of Irish will also be presented by Nóirín Ní Nuadháin titled “Ceol, Spórt agus Spraoi i Múineadh na Gaeilge”
