Induction Project calling all schools

Is your school interested in becoming involved in the National Pilot Project on Teacher Induction (NPPTI)?

The NPPTI was esablished in 2002 and is a partnership initiative between the Department of Education and Science (represented by the Teacher Education Section), the three teachers unions, the Colleges of Education (primary strand of the project), UCD (second level strand of the project) and the schools participating in the project.

The primary aim of the NPPTI is to develop high quality proposals for an effective national programme of Induction for newly qualified teachers (NQTs) in primary and post-primary schools in Ireland. The objective of induction is towards supporting the professional development of NQTs by way of systematic support in their first year of teaching, thus laying the foundations for subsequent professional growth and development.

A key characteristic of this programme is the support offered at school level by experienced teachers referred to as mentors. These teachers undertake professional training for their role as mentors and are allocated release time (with substitute cover) to facilitate in-school mentoring activities with the NQTs.

The Primary strand is co-ordinated by Mary Burke, based in St Patrick's College.
